Jim Doubleday , of Pelham, Massachusetts, has been creating art since high school, and professionally since 1970. Originally trained in blacksmithing, he turned to the production of fine art sculptural works after returning from a summer on the Beaufort Sea above Western Canada. The impact of nightless months spent on the stark tundra and among the ice flows at sea gave birth to his love of the abstract form. The Inuit carvers he met there likewise influenced his figurative sculpture.
After fourteen years working alone with hand tools, Jim’s introduction to modern stone carving methods took place over two years at the studio of Louisville, Kentucky stone sculptor Paul Fields. For the next three years, Jim worked at Bright Studio, where figurative sculptor Barney Bright taught him the intricacies of creating life size bronze figures. Jim’s contemporary works of art are direct expressions of these varied experiences. |
